I recently began my apprenticeship. Am I eligible?

Answer: You are eligible for fee-free training if you begin your apprenticeship qualification with your training provider on or after July 1, 2018. This implies you and your company will not have to pay the qualifying student fee. If you begin training before this date, the student fee must still be paid to the training provider by you or your employer.

Am I eligible for fee-free apprenticeship training if I begin training after July 1, 2018?

Answer: Yes, if your Smart and Skilled apprenticeship begins on or after July 1, 2018, neither you nor your employer will be required to pay the qualifying student fee. 

How many subsidized entry-level qualifications, up to Certificate III, can I start or finish via Smart and Skilled?

Answer: A previous certification does not impact your ability to pursue training up to Certificate III level under Smart and Skilled, but it does affect the student cost. If you fulfil the Smart and Skilled eligibility requirements to pursue a qualification up to and including Certificate III and do not have any post-secondary qualifications, you will pay the lower cost for your first Smart and Skilled subsidised course at Certificate III or below. You will pay a higher charge for any future Smart and Skilled courses.

How do TAFE and a vocational qualification affect eligibility for Smart and Skilled training?

Answer: Any VET certificate gained during your secondary education will not impact your eligibility for Smart and Skilled training. This is because it is not regarded as a post-secondary qualification. However, if you enrolled in a VET certificate that was not required for your secondary schooling and completed it beyond the age of 17, your cost may be affected. Please keep in mind that if your previous qualification is considered post-school, your cost will be greater.

How does Smart and Skilled affect me even if I am enrolled in a vocational education and training course?

Answer: If you completed a secondary education course, you are still eligible for Smart and Skilled training subsidies. A course completed as part of your secondary education does not count as a postsecondary certification. If you have not completed any other qualifications after leaving school, you are entitled to register for a Smart and Skilled course at any qualification level for a reduced charge.

How does completing a certification that includes some of the modules from the Smart and Skilled course impact my fee?

Answer: You should notify your Smart and Skilled training provider that you have previously completed these modules, or units of competency, and would want to request a credit transfer for them. If you are allowed credit transfer for one or more units of competency, your authorized Smart and Skilled training provider will recalculate your student fee based on the units/modules for which you have received credit. If you are recognized for past learning, your student fee might be adjusted and decreased.
